Rolling out a new trick:

For such a popular trick, it is amazing how difficult it can be to teach your pup to roll over. The key to this trick is to take it in stages. If your pup isn’t used to rolling onto his back then you may have to take baby steps towards your goal. Let’s try these steps to get you going in the right direction:

  1. Start with your pup in a down position and a treat in your hand.
  2. State the command “roll over” and use the treat to lure your pup onto his side. Once he is lying on one side, give him the treat.
  3. While your pup is still on his side, use a new treat to lure him onto his back so his 4 legs are all off the ground. When you get him onto his back, treat and praise.
  4. Repeat these first three steps a couple of times. Getting your pup to his back is the most difficult part and may take some convincing the first few times.
  5. When you are able to lure your pup to his back easily, use a third treat to lure your pup all the way to the other side to complete the roll.
  6. When your pup makes it all the way around treat, praise and restate the command “roll over”.
  7. After you have performed the luring method several times with success try to remove the lure and only treat when your pup makes a full turn on his own.

I think you’ve got it! Keep practicing and the next time a friend comes over and demands a roll, your pup will pull it out like he has known the command all along!
